Our Story
Joe Hashey, CSCS
I spent my middle and high school years, working in basements and installing furnaces with my father. He and his friends had that “real world strength” that I hear tossed around all the time. I recall shaking hands with some of his co workers, only to have my hand engulfed like it was miniature.
My brothers and I spent most of our time hauling around furnaces, boilers, pipes, and much more in-between schools and sports. I loved sports and I loved competition. Unfortunately I didn’t love the gym…yet! The strength that we received from the hard work paid off in high school.
Was I the best athlete? No. However, I had the gift of work ethic, passed down through the generations.
I also had the beginnings of this “real world strength.” Fortunately I had two great coaches in high school, and they set me up with a former NFL player to develop my strength. What a blessing! I became hooked on the iron immediately.
There is something about lifting weights that is tough to describe. My training landed me at Colgate University to play football, I was ecstatic.
Long story short, after starting as a freshman, I suffer a series of knee injuries and had 5 surgeries. The doctors told me that I would never regain full strength after having “lateral releases” and cartilage removed. I ballooned up to 315 lbs and felt like crap.
In 2002, I decided to get serious about my training and cut down to 250 lbs. Since then, I have become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and started training clients. After they saw huge results they told their friends and the personal training started to spread like wildfire.
Oh, and just to be defiant, I regained strength in my legs and improved my knee healthy through a proper workout program. I played two years of semi pro football and was selected to the league all star team.
I started Synergy Athletics back in 2005, a gym in my garage. We packed it with clients and opened the new Synergy Athletics in 2009!
We started to receive international recognition from our articles and popular YouTube Videos amassing millions of views. This past summer trainers from around New York, Virginia, Vermont, New Jersey, Ohio, and other states traveled to Synergy Athletics just to watch our training methods. This past summer I also hosted a trainer from the United Kingdom that joined us for a week in order to take some of our methods back to his country.
I am truly excited for everyday in the gym and love working with the dedicated athletes!
